Meet Jenn

How it began…

Ten years ago I wrote a blog under the name ‘Hungry Belly Travels’. Before you ask- no it doesn’t exist on the internet anymore.

As a mid twenties female traveller I wrote about what I saw and experienced as I ventured out into the world. I was more confident than the early 20s/terrified backpacker/self. Yet still firmly stuck in the notion that one must tick boxes when visiting a destination. There were ‘must see places’ that if not accomplished meant that I hadn’t truly experienced the destination. There were ‘must eats’ and ‘must do’s’. Also if I traveled fast enough I could fit in multiple locations and cover maximum content. It was often a whirlwind. I relied heavily on fellow bloggers and trip advisor to tell me what I needed to do. There was the fear that my limited time in each city would be ruined if I had one terrible meal or didn’t gather enough content or pictures. It’s exhausting to even think back on…

Where to from here…

Now, As a mid 30s traveller with a tiny human in tow, my version of travel has changed dramatically. It is still very much about filling my hungry belly but there has been a seismic change to the pace. Rather than having single digit days in a location I’ll spend weeks. Revisiting a city on repeat is a delight rather than the faux pax it would once have been.

In my recent travels I’ve decided to reduce reliance on internet content and separate from the trusty Tripadvisor reviews. I’ve had too many experiences of going to a well reviewed restaurant only to find it either doesn’t meet (or just meets )expectations. I want to be surprised by what I discover. So for now I follow my nose for delicious foods, ask locals where they eat or join a queue when I see one. Yes I’ll have a few fails along the way Yet the joy of finding a place or eatery that exceeds my expectations will overshadow any mediocrity I would otherwise experience.

The above is not to say that I won’t be checking out some of those top experiences. There are sites and eateries that I am still intrigues to try, but there will be a lot more of ‘I just stumbled upon this’… or “I spent an afternoon just walking’. The pace of my travel will be slower. I hope to give more context around the why and the how’s.
